Iowa 80 Trucking Museum Constructs Exhibit on Vintage Electric Trucks

In recent times we have witnessed sharp increases in gasoline and diesel prices. Combined with the public’s heightened awareness of the environment, this has led to the renewed interest in, and the reintroduction of, electrically powered vehicles. Many are under the impression that electric vehicles are a relatively new concept, when in fact use of electric trucks in the U.S. is more than 100 years old.

The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum has constructed a new exhibit on vintage electric trucks to educate the public on the history and origins of electric vehicles. Included in the exhibit is a 1911 Walker Electric Milk Delivery Truck. “We are pleased to be able to share this fantastic piece of history with the general public,” says Dave Meier, Museum Curator. “Since there wasn’t a supporting infrastructure for the electric vehicle, the gasoline powered vehicle became the favored type and many don’t even realize that both were invented at roughly the same time.”

The exhibit displays information about how electric vehicles came to be, their use as well as specific information about the 1911 Walker on display.
Iowa 80 Trucking Museum is location adjacent to Iowa 80 Truckstop, I-80 Exit 284, Walcott, Iowa, and is open to the general public Wednesday thru Sunday. Admission is free.

The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum will be displaying many antique trucks at the 2009 Walcott Truckers Jamboree. Most of them have not yet been on display in the museum, but are part of the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum’s collection.
The Truckers Jamboree is hosted every year at the Iowa 80 Truckstop, I-80 Exit 284, Walcott, Iowa. Since it’s inception in 1979, the Truckers Jamboree has been celebrating America’s Truckers. The 30th Anniversary Walcott Truckers Jamboree will be held July 9-10, 2009.
This event is a great place to celebrate and learn about trucking and those big rigs. It is a big thank you to the millions of truck drivers that deliver the goods we consume. Whether it’s groceries, gas, clothes or cars — you can bet it was delivered by a truck.

1936 International Scale Truck Arrives at Iowa 80 Trucking Museum

1936 International Scale Truck Arrives at Iowa 80 Trucking Museum
October 30, 2008

1936 International Scale Truck
This 1936 International was built to travel around the United States and test public scales. Before 1935, the scales were not correctly monitored and the federal government wanted to start a program to check the accuracy of public scales. There were 18 trucks built for this task. Trucks where built from 1935-1937 and this is one of four built 1936.
The operator would use the truck’s crane to place fifteen 1,000-pound weights on the scale and record weather or not the scale was accurate. When the final reports were tallied at the end of the program in May 1941, it was determined that an astounding 71.2% of the scales were inaccurate and it became obvious that national standards and monitoring was needed.
This truck was in service from November 5, 1936 to May 17, 1941.
