Iowa Tourism Industry Announces Epic Iowa Road Trip

April 25, 2014 (Des Moines, Iowa) — Beginning next week, a specially wrapped motorcoach will travel nearly 2,100 miles promoting more than 60 tourism destinations in 33 counties and 46 communities across the state in an Epic Iowa Road Trip.

The effort, a partnership among the Central Iowa Tourism Region, Eastern Iowa Tourism Association, Western Iowa Tourism Region and the Iowa Tourism Office, is meant to showcase and recognize Iowa’s travel destinations. The Epic Iowa Road Trip will take place May 2-10.

** The Epic Iowa Road Trip will make a stop at the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum at the Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. on Monday, May 5th. **

“Travel is big business in Iowa, as traveler spending here exceeds $7 billion annually,” said Iowa Tourism Office Manager Shawna Lode. “This trip will highlight Iowa’s thousands of tourism destinations and the people who manage them. Along the way, we want to inspire people to choose Iowa as a vacation destination.”

Highlights of the trip include the Market on Main in Ottumwa, Snake Alley in Burlington, Mount Vernon’s Chalk the Walk Festival, the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum in Walcott, Hansen’s Farm Fresh Dairy Farm in Hudson, Charles City’s Whitewater at Riverfront Park, Arnold’s Park in Okoboji, the Danish Windmill Welcome Center in Elk Horn and the Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs.

“Every county – large and small – has something to offer the traveling public,” said Ann Vogelbacher, Executive Director of the Central Iowa Tourism Region. “Whether that’s a unique restaurant, an out-of-the way bed and breakfast or renowned event, travelers are often surprised by what they can experience in Iowa.”

Carrie Koelker, Executive Director of the Eastern Iowa Tourism Association, said, “This road trip gives us a great venue to showcase the diverse range of tourism options in Iowa from annual events like Tulip Time in Pella to zip lining in Dubuque.”

“We’re also using this trip as a way to say thank you to our industry members for their hard work,” said Shirley Phillips, Western Iowa Tourism Region Executive Director. “Iowa’s tourism success is a direct result of their efforts.”
