Trucks on Display

Below is a sampling of many of the trucks on display in our Trucking Hall of Fame® Exhibit Hall. When you visit, you’ll find more than what is featured here.

1918 Independent

Truck Information:
There were a lot of trucks made in the early years, but not many made in Iowa. This 1918 Independent is a local truck; it was made in Davenport, Iowa. This was the only truck brand manufactured in Iowa and they were only made for a short time. There is a glass windshield, but no wipers. In 1918 you were lucky to have a roof, door and window. You didn't have a defroster either; you used your sleeve no doubt to wipe the interior of the window off. You weren't going very fast; chances are the driver put his hand out the window and wiped it occasionally. They hadn't thought of all those creature comforts that we now consider necessities. The front window opens partially; that's your air conditioning. Lots of windshields back then opened from the top and that was your ventilation; there are no other vents in the cab. Independent was one of those little brands that didn't last all that long, but it was made right here in Davenport. It is an assembled truck as many were at the time. They bought parts from various sources and put them together into trucks they called Independent.
