Truck Information:
The White Steam Car was introduced in 1901 by White Sewing of Cleveland, Ohio. At the time, they also marketed bicycles, roller skates, phonographs, kerosene lamps, automatic lathes, and screw machines. By 1906, the demand was so great for the steam car that White Motor Company was founded. Trucks were built under the White name until 1995. This truck, with its butterfly hood and wide fenders, has good presence. Those decades-old features were not uncommon in 1962. What is unusual about this truck is that it has a gasoline engine in an era when most trucks had diesel. It also has a factory sleeper cab; the bed area is 22 inches wide, which isn't very big. Compared to a White truck from 1946 - 16 years earlier - there isn't much difference. It is bigger and the doors flare out for the sleeper, but the design is nearly the same. Since it has a gas engine, it was probably used for local deliveries. It only has 235 HP, which is not much power. Interstate highways were just being built in 1962. For local deliveries you would have traveled mostly on two-lane highways and stopped for traffic lights in towns. There wouldn't have been any roads to drive 70 mph on like today's interstates, but this truck didn't have enough power to go that fast anyway. Top Speed: 60 MPH
