1950 Peterbilt 350

Engine Type:
Cummins NH 262

Transmission Type:
15-Speed

Truck Information:
Built in Oakland, CA in 1950, this Peterbilt 350 was originally purchased and used by the Seaside Oil Company of Santa Barbara. It's a classic '50s-style truck with a long conventional hood and an air cleaner sticking out of the side. For decades, Peterbilt has been known for quality and class. They were even one of the first companies to consider driver comfort. Distributing surveys to drivers, they asked for feedback to ensure newer models were accommodating to driver requests and concerns. Despite their higher class, these trucks could be difficult to drive due to demanding shift requirements. At times, drivers would have to reach through the wheel to shift both levers at once. If a gear was missed, it became challenging to get back in the right gear. Mastering the art of shifting and planning ahead was essential for drivers of this type of truck. These early trucks didn't have a very large power band like today's do. You had to run them from about 1600 to 1900 RPMs and stay in that range. This is a Western truck; it's long. You would not have had a truck like this in the Midwest or East in the '50s.
