1955 Mack LTL

Engine Type:
235 Horsepower Cummins NT-6-B

Transmission Type:
5-Speed Mack TR720 and Brown-Lipe 8035 G Auxiliary 3-Speed

Truck Information:
Only 2,009 of these Mack LTLs were built from 1947 to 1956. This model is known for starting the long hood conventional truck style. Mack LTLs were Western-style trucks. That was because the western United States did not have the same restrictive length laws that the east coast had at the time. The canister on the side of the hood is a Luber-finer. It is a low-flow oil filter that was used on trucks of that era. While the engine was running, it was continuously filtering and purifying the oil. Earlier trucks had oil filters that were about like gym socks; they didn’t work as well as a the Luber-finer. You would have been the king of the road in this truck when it was new. This Mack was built in 1955 for Downey Trucking in Downey, California. It still has the original engine, transmission, and rear axles in it. A 34” aluminum sleeper was added by the Los Angeles Mack branch, and later removed for the truck’s conversion to oil field use. When Iowa 80 acquired this truck, it was used on tough wrecker calls that required three wrecker trucks. Top speed: 60 MPH
