1941 Freightliner Wrecker

Truck Information:
The Freightliner brand started as an offshoot of the Consolidated Freightways trucking company. Consolidated Freightways built their own trucks. When other people wanted to buy their trucks, they started selling them. Then the government intervened and said they couldn't be in the trucking business while simultaneously selling trucks. So, they started a separate company called Freightliner and continued to sell trucks. This 1941 Freightliner is actually a rebuilt Fageol. You can see the Fageol front fenders and their distinctive headlight mounts. The rear ends are Timken worm drive. This truck has a crane on the back that would have been used to load freight onto a flatbed trailer pulled behind it. The casting date on the block of the Cummins engine is December 8, 1941, one day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. When Bill Moon noticed this truck posted for sale by Jerry Noordman of Enumclaw, Washington, he commented that it was a rare truck and someone really should buy it. Jerry was a long time truck collector. He believed, as did Bill Moon, that old trucks are significant pieces of history and should not be scrapped. A few years later the truck was for sale again. It was at this time that Iowa 80 purchased the truck. Top Speed: 45 MPH
