This 1924 Brockway was made in Cortland, New York by the Brockway Motor Company. Brockway started out making horse-drawn wagons. When trucks were introduced, Brockway could see that wagons were not going to be around for much longer and so they started making trucks. This 1924 Brockway is an assembled truck with hard rubber tires and wood wheels. It has a C-cab and a roof - just a very simple unit with a little freight box. You would have paid $3,000 to buy this truck new in 1924. It does have a windshield wiper, but you worked it by hand. While you steered with one hand, you’d operate the wiper with the other. It is a 2.5-ton heavy-duty truck with dual rear wheels. Two and a half tons of material is a lot to load and unload by hand. Back then, there were no forklifts or pallet jacks; everything had to be done manually. Truck drivers were not only responsible for driving the truck but for loading and unloading it as well. Mack purchased Brockway in 1956, but they continued to be made until 1977. By that time there wasn’t any difference between Macks and Brockways. They were exactly the same truck – just with different brand names. Top Speed: 20 MPH
