1910 Avery Tractor/Gasoline Farm Wagon

Engine Type:
Rothenberger 4-Cylinder

Transmission Type:
3-Speed Avery

Truck Information:
Avery made tractors, threshing machines, and other farm equipment. They also made trucks for farmers. This is one of six Averys known to still exist. It has cast-iron rims with tapered wood plugs for traction. Instead of replacing the whole wheel, the wood plugs could be replaced individually as needed. The truck cost $2,500 new, with rubber tires as an option for an additional $500. In 1910 that was a lot of money. It was advertised to do the work of six to eight horses. This truck is versatile: it could haul up to 100 bushels of wheat, pull a 3-bottom plow, or even run a threshing machine through an additional belt pulley. The whole truck weighs only 5,875 pounds. The truck has a four-cylinder Rothenberger engine. The cylinders are cast singly; it has a magneto and a coil ignition system that worked once you had it running. It is unrestored and still has the original 1910 paint and pinstriping on it. The seats are stuffed with horsehair. Everything was pretty simple back then. A farmer would work on his own truck. It can go three speeds forward and one in reverse, none of them very fast. One funny feature this truck does have is an exhaust cut-off. It is a valve that opens to let the exhaust out sooner which channels more power to the drive. An exhaust cut-off is the kind of thing you would have found on a hot rod 40 to 50 years after this truck was built. Top Speed: 15 MPH
