This 1966 Autocar is built from stainless-steel sheet metal provided by Edgcomb Steel Company. Edgcomb – a supplier of both ferrous and nonferrous metals – was founded in 1923 in North Philadelphia, PA. In 1951 Edgcomb decided to make their fleet of trucks more spectacular by having the cab, bumper, hood, fenders, running boards, radiator shell, aprons, and exhaust stack made entirely of stainless steel. For several years Autocar made these, one or two at a time, for Edgcomb Steel. This is one of the thirteen Autocars built for Edgcomb Steel through the years; eight or nine have survived. Of the thirteen built, only two were diesel. This truck is one of them. When we got this truck, it has some fair-sized dents in it. When you are doing stainless steel body work, you can't hide anything with body putty; there can't be any imperfections. The front bumper was scratched and dented. We didn't replace anything; we restored it slowly, carefully, and with a lot of filing and polishing. The bumper and all the sheet metal are original. Stainless steel is a tough material; it doesn't dent easily like thin-gauge sheet metal. The worst part about driving something like this would be driving into the sun and having the reflection and glare coming at you from the stainless steel. This is a truck that definitely attracts attention. Top Speed: 60 MPH
