Iowa 80 Trucking Museum to Expand Exhibit Hall

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum is currently expanding the museum by adding on to the current truck Exhibit Hall. The new addition will add an additional 21,600 square feet to the Exhibit Hall. “We have more trucks that we want to share with the general public and this expansion will allow us to do that, as well as display select trucks that have been graciously loaned to us,” says Dave Meier, Museum Curator.

When complete, over 60 trucks will be exhibited at one time, double the current display. “We will also be adding air conditioning to the entire Exhibit Hall,” says Meier. “Being able to control the building climate will not only make it more comfortable for our visitors, but will also help preserve of trucks on display.”

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum expects the newly expanded Exhibit Hall to open in December 2012.

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum to Host 100th Birthday Party for 1911 Walker Electric Truck

WALCOTT, IOWA – Iowa 80 Trucking Museum will host a 100th Birthday party for its 1911 Walker Electric Truck on Friday, July 15th at 2:30 pm. The event will coincide with this year’s Walcott Truckers Jamboree, July 14-15. The public is welcome to attend the celebration.

“Many people think that electric vehicles are a recent invention, when in fact they were in production over 100 years ago.” says Dave Meier, museum curator.

The Walker Vehicle Company was based in Chicago, Illinois and manufactured electric vehicles until late 1941. Walker trucks were used mainly as delivery trucks in major cities; delivering ice cream and other dairy products, baked goods and dry goods. This particular truck was owned by Bowman Dairy and used to deliver milk to hospitals, restaurants and hotels. Electric vehicles were popular in the late-19th century and early 20th century, until advances in internal combustion engine technology and mass production of cheaper gasoline vehicles led to a decline in their use.

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum purchased this particular truck at an auction several years ago. It is one of only a handful of Walker Electric trucks known to still exist.

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum to Celebrate Iowa Museum Day

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum will join many other museums across the State of Iowa celebrating Iowa Museum Day on Saturday, May 14, 2011. The museum will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with free admission as well as balloons and a coloring contest for kids.

The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum features exhibits on trucking history. Trucks on display date as far back as 1910 and include many rare makes and models. Antique signs, gas pumps and other trucking memorabilia are also on display. Visitors can view vintage trucking films in the REO Theatre. The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum also provides guided tours for clubs and organizations as well as local schools.

Fully Restored Freight Truck Takes on New Life as Permanent Museum Exhibit

In April 1983, truck 414-3001, a Ford Model 8000 cab-over tractor, now affectionately known as “Ole Number One,” rolled off of the assembly line and went into service at Con-way Central Express, a regional motor carrier start-up launched by the then Consolidated Freightways, Inc. Now, 28 years later, a commemorative ceremony will be held to mark the donation of this original truck — which has been completely restored — to the Iowa 80 Museum by Con-way Freight. The event will feature the truck’s original driver — who still drives for Con-way — and the driver’s freight operations supervisor from those early years, who rose to become president of Con-way Central Express and chief operating officer of Con-way Freight before retiring last year. The truck will be on display at the event.

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum Offers Free Tours for Area Schools

WALCOTT, IOWA — The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum is pleased to offer Quad City Area schools the opportunity to learn more about trucking history through free guided tours. “We understand that all of the school districts on both sides of the river are struggling with budget issues and many have been forced to cut field trips. We felt it was important to inform the schools and general public that we offer guided tours for groups free of charge,” says Dave Meier, museum curator.

The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum has also launched a “Teacher Tools” feature in the Education section on its website that gives teachers additional ideas on how to incorporate social studies and math into their visit, as well as suggestions for post visit classroom activities. The section is written for grades K-5.

The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum is located next to the Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott, Iowa and is open Wednesday – Saturday from 9am-5pm and Sunday Noon – 5pm. Schools may schedule tours by calling the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum at 563-468-5500 or online at www.iowa80truckingmuseum.com/education.
